But that can’t be right, can it? Isn’t this just a placebo effect?”

This is a common reaction following a session of hypnotherapy or EMDR therapy.

Not because anything unclear has happened, but because the change may be faster and more immediate than many people expect.

We are used to symptoms such as anxiety gradually easing through talking and with time.
As a result, rapid change often feels almost illogical.

In this blog, you can read about how it works, what EMDR and hypnosis do to help with anxiety symptoms, and why it is not a placebo effect.

Fear is often an automatic reaction

You might recognise this: you know something is safe, but your body reacts differently.

With symptoms such as anxiety, there is usually no ‘logical problem’ involved.

Fear is often an automatic response of the nervous system.
A reaction triggered by a past experience, situation or pattern.

It is important to understand that your nervous system does not operate on the basis of logic, but on the basis of safety.

The system in your body is constantly preoccupied with one question:
“Am I safe or not?”

And it happens in the blink of an eye — before you even have time to think about it.

One part of the brain in particular plays a key role in this automatic response: the amygdala. Dit is het alarmsysteem van je brein. Het scant constant je omgeving én je innerlijke beleving op mogelijk gevaar.

If something resembles a previous situation in which you experienced tension, anxiety or a sense of being overwhelmed, that alarm system may react immediately — even if the current situation is objectively safe.

Your body is then not reacting to the here and now, but to a oude inschatting van gevaar.

That is why it can happen that, rationally, you know full well that something is safe — for example, speaking in a group, driving a car, or a particular memory — yet your body reacts differently. Your heart rate increases, you feel tension in your stomach, your breathing changes, or a feeling of unease seems to arise ‘all of a sudden’.

What actually happens is that your nervous system triggers an old association from a previous experience or a moment when something was perceived as unsafe or overwhelming.

At that moment, your brain doesn’t say: “This is dangerous now”, but rather:
“This looks like something that used to be dangerous.”

And that’s enough to set the whole system in motion.

And that is precisely why anxiety can sometimes feel so persistent — not because you don’t understand something, but because it is driven by something else.

Why talking about it doesn’t always help

Talking, analysing and understanding mainly take place in the thinking part of your brain (the prefrontal cortex).

But fear responses are driven by a deeper, automatic system that does not operate on the basis of language.

That’s why you often hear:

“I know it’s not necessary, but I still feel it.”

“Ik snap het wel, maar mijn lichaam reageert anders.”

“It just happens, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.”

And that is not a contradiction.

They are simply two different systems in your brain and body that do not always respond at the same time.

Why it sometimes seems so ‘sudden’

Because these reactions are triggered automatically, it may seem as though anxiety comes out of nowhere.

In reality, there is often a trigger, but it is subtle:

a particular situation that resembles something that happened earlier

a physical sensation (e.g. a racing heart, dizziness)

a thought that unconsciously triggers something

or even a mood, a scent or a context

So you don’t actually need to consciously recognise it in order to react to it.

A brief real-life example

A client had been driving perfectly well for years, until, following a stressful period, she suddenly felt a sense of panic whilst on the motorway.

Rationally, she knew: I’m safe; everything’s fine.

But her body reacted differently: tension, a racing heart, the urge to give up.

Whilst at work, it turned out that the problem was not the driving itself, but a previously stored stress response that had been triggered again by tiredness and tension.

As soon as that automatic response had been processed, the fear of driving disappeared too — without any need to ‘learn to drive’.

Why it is important to understand this

Once you realise that anxiety isn’t a problem with your thinking, but an automatic response from the nervous system, the way you view recovery changes too.

It means, in fact, that change does not have to come about solely through insight or discussion, but also by influencing that automatic layer.

And that is precisely where techniques such as EMDR and hypnosis come into play.

Not by changing the story,
but by altering the response in the body and brain.

In conclusion

Anxiety often feels as though it is ‘all in your head’, but it is largely driven by automatic processes in your nervous system.

And precisely because it came about automatically, it can also change at that level.

Klik Click here to go to my EMDR page and Click here to go to my Hypnotherapy page

EMDR en hypnose bij angst: ontdek hoe het werkt en waarom klachten soms sneller kunnen verminderen dan verwacht.
